Collaboration Cures the Cyber Blues

Motivating the Cybersecurity Community

Some of my colleagues and friends in the cybersecurity community have expressed concern about how to stay motivated during the onslaught of cyberattacks.

The uphill climb can be challenging to any one of us at any time. Cyber professionals are taking time to assess their impact and progress.

This year, I edited a book that included the story of Sisyphus. As we are well into October, which is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, his story in Greek mythology came to mind.

The Sisyphus Myth

Doomed to forever roll a massive boulder up a steep hill, Sisyphus faced an eternity of useless effort, representing a fruitless, impossible task.

As we defeat cyber enemies, some will strike again and beat us. As we make progress, we may lose traction and slip back.

Keep the faith. We are not forever doomed to push the boulder up the mountain as Sisyphus did.

The Cure to the Cyber Blues

The cure is collaboration.

The cybersecurity community includes people with brilliant minds, determination, motivation, and big hearts. We must remain strong despite threats, attacks, scaremongering, deception, and manipulation. We are stronger together — as a community.

There is hope.
