A Cybersecurity Book Ignites STEM Passions

” Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more so that we may fear less.” — Marie Curie

In a week marked by profound gratitude, my cybersecurity colleague’s daughter made a pivotal career choice after reading my book, “33 Ways Not To Screw Up Cybersecurity.” A promotional eBook at 99 cents until July 1st sparked her STEM journey. Indeed, a cybersecurity book may transcend its genre, awakening aspirations beyond online security into education and training.

Charging Forward with Girls in STEM

Educate a girl in STEM and change the world.

I’ve long championed the cause of Girls in STEM, outlining the continuous effort to engage girls in these subjects. Today, our struggles bear fruit. The recent NCSES report reveals the narrowing gender gap, with more women embracing STEM careers. The representation of women in the STEM workforce has increased to 35% in 2021, up from 32% in 2011 and 8% in 1970.

The Wage Gap Disparities Persist

However, the journey is far from over. As highlighted by PC Magazine, women in STEM still earn less than men—approximately $60,000 compared to $65,000 with persistent gender, race, and disability wage gaps. There is more to do to achieve wage equality.

STEM Growth in Diversity and the Workforce

On the positive side, STEM professions comprise 24% of the US workforce, up from 21% in 2011, with increased diversity. More diversity will result in a larger, more robust STEM workforce.
